There are many sayings when it comes to describing big or small things. "It's not the size that matters but how you use It." or "Big things come in small packages" are two that automatically come to my head. I'm sure it was the same thought when many saw the commercial for the new Nano.
When I first saw the commercial I was surprised that they would have taken the perfectly fine Ipod Nano and make it take on a smaller, old looking Ipod shuffle style. I thought it was a poor decision on Apple’s part because in the commercial it seems as if they are promoting the portability and ease of use of the touch screen. It seems to me like it would be very irksome and difficult to use the tiny touch screen and deal with the cut in storage size. Also, with the touch screen I believe that it will just cause more problems because it makes the screen more vulnerable to falls, cracks, and glitches. Some say that it is the right step for Apple but I believe it could just end up being a bust. Only time and sales will tell the tale.
The new Ipod Nano takes on a little bit of both worlds.
I do agree that the small touch screen would be a nuisance, especially when you are used to a larger screen. This does however, point out a very important aspect of Media. We constantly demand for it to be better and better. For example a few years ago any sort of touch screen would most likely be welcomed by consumers. Now though, we want something better. As with all media we are always demanding vast improvements.
ReplyDeleteGood job keeping up with the new products Apple churns out. I would like to see you asking questions more like: what kind of social significance does this small nono have on our lives? why is there a fetish that the small is the better? what does it say about our desire to be mobile, flexible, and unattached to our surroundings? If 'media are the extensions of Man,' doesn't it follow that the bigger the extension the more powerful you become? No?
ReplyDeleteStrive to ask interesting questions about media artifacts that we take for granted.

I agree with you. I used to listen to music through my blackberry. However, I started to go running nowadays, so I was planning to buy an iPod nano. When I opened the apple website, they announced a new iPod nano that look exactly like the iPod shuffle but with a touch screen. I was really disappointed. I kinda think that Apple's innovation has become limited. Since the demand for apple product nowadays is so great, it is trying to come up with a "brand new" product that combines different features of their existing products
ReplyDeleteI thought the new nano commercial was pretty cool. The point of the nano is to provide enough storage space for the casual music listener in as small a device as possible (with the presence of a screen separating it from the shuffle). I was really impressed by the innovation and ambition for Apple to produce a nano so small, that the whole front of it is the screen. The touch screen technology from the iPhone makes this breakthrough in MP3 players possible.
